Become a Resource Parent in Santa Cruz County

Step 1: Attend an Orientation

The orientations provide an overview of the entire Child Welfare process and an opportunity to meet with Social Workers and other resource parents.

Step 2: Complete the Application Process

To receive a Resource Family Approval Application after attending an Orientation, call (831) 345-2700 or e-mail us. A Resource Family Approval Social Worker can meet with you to complete the paperwork.

1. Complete a Resource Family Approval Application within 5 days of having a child placed with you
2. Provide a written emergency plan of evacuation for you home
3. Complete Live Scan Fingerprinting, in our offices and free of charge
4. Participate in criminal background checks
5. Pass a home inspection conducted by a Resource Family Approval Social Worker
6. Submit DMV records
7. Complete a County approved CPR/First Aid class
8. Participate in a physical exam and get cleared by a medical doctor
9. All adults living in your home must take a TB test
10. Establish proof of residency within Santa Cruz County
11. Engage in a comprehensive permanency assessment
12. Provide three character references
13. Complete fifteen hours of training

Step 3: Attend the Appropriate Training

The 15-hour Fostering Foundations training is offered on Tuesday evenings and is free of charge.  This training is offered several times a year. Your Resource Family Approval Social Worker can sign you up.
